A pregnancy scan is a diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the fetus inside the uterus. A handheld device called a transducer sends sound waves into the body, which bounce back from the developing baby and surrounding structures. These echoes are processed by a computer to produce real-time images on a screen.


Pregnancy scans help doctors assess fetal growth, position, and health, as well as monitor the placenta and amniotic fluid. Since it does not involve radiation, ultrasound is safe for both the mother and the baby.

Our Pregnancy Scan Process

A pregnancy scan involves using ultrasound imaging to monitor the fetus. The process generally includes:

  • Preparation

    The patient may be asked to drink water before the scan, especially in early pregnancy, to help improve image clarity.

  • Scanning

    A transducer is gently moved over the abdomen, or in early stages, a transvaginal probe may be used.

  • Image Creation

    The sound waves create real-time images of the baby, uterus, and surrounding structures on a monitor.

  • Result Review

    The doctor reviews the images to assess fetal health and shares findings with the patient.
